An opportunity to respond to the Knights of
Columbus ideal of charity is available in Lancaster
through the local chapter of Habitat For Humanity
(HFH).
HFH provides a hand up , not a handout , to low
income families who want to become homeowners
but cannot afford a conventional mortgage . Once
accepted into the program the family is required to
work 500 hours to qualify for a loan and become the
owners of a HFH property. Their labor along with
that of community volunteers results in new
housing units in Lancaster .
Two brother Knights from the St. John Neumann
Council , Joe Thomas and George Stadler , have
been volunteering for construction work at HFH over
the last year or so . George is recently retired and
works every Friday . Joe works three days/week at
times when he is available from his construction
business . Both feel that their efforts to help others
obtain affordable housing is valuable to the HFH
families as well as the Lancaster community .
Brother Knights could volunteer as individuals
as described above , or a group could go together
for a day , or several days to the construction site .
Working together with other Lancaster men would
also provide an opportunity to gain new members
for the Knights .
Help is also needed to publicize Habitat within
the SJN parish to inform men and women of the
local need.
